A 35 year old Operational Support Division (OSD), Santigie Kamara, has appeared in court for the second time before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Pademba Road Court No. 1 in Freetown. He was charged with the case of murder under Section 1 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, which was amended by the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2021 (Act No. 6 of 2022).
Kamara is accused of killing Francis Amara Kanneh on January 19, 2025, at 555 Lorry Park in Waterloo, Western Rural District in Freetown, according to court files. Kamara denied to plead when the allegations were read and clarified in court.
The prosecution witness, Inspector Foday Bobor from the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Homicide Unit testified on April 7. He told the court that he sent the case and investigation file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on February 14 for legal advice.
He stated that the DPP’s response was received on February 21 and is formally documented as part of the inquiry. Inspector Bobor also testified that on February 24, he and his partner, Inspector Paul Amara Makieu, formally charged Kamara.
The accused provided a charge statement in Krio, which was translated into English and authenticated by Kamara using his right thumbprint in the presence of detectives. The statement was presented to the court as evidence.
W.C. Oluba Esq., the defense counsel, examined the witness during the hearings. Due to the gravity of the charge, Magistrate Kekura denied Kamara bail and ordered him held at the Male Correctional Facility on Pademba Road. The case has been adjourned until April 9, 2025, for further hearing.
