Sierra Leone’s Parliament has officially approved the appointment of Joseph Maada Lahai as the new Commissioner of the National Youth Commission (NAYCOM).
The decision, made on Tuesday, marks a new chapter for the institution tasked with spearheading youth empowerment and development initiatives across the country.
Joseph Maada Lahai will now assume leadership of NAYCOM, an agency established to coordinate youth-related programs and advise government policy on youth affairs. His appointment follows a nomination by President Julius Maada Bio, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of youth-focused governance as part of his broader national development agenda.
In his new role, Lahai is expected to provide strategic direction and oversight of NAYCOM’s operations. Key responsibilities will include guiding policy formulation, coordinate national youth programs, and foster partnerships aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of young people in Sierra Leone.
Parliament’s endorsement of Lahai’s appointment has been welcomed by various stakeholders in the youth development sector, who see it as an opportunity to revitalize and strengthen NAYCOM’s mandate.
Observers will be watching closely as Commissioner Lahai takes office, particularly in areas such as youth employment, skills training, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship support sectors that have remained central to Sierra Leone’s youth development challenges.
With a growing youth population and increasing demand for opportunities and representation, the role of NAYCOM under new leadership will be critical in addressing the aspirations and concerns of Sierra Leone’s young people.
