Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella has said that becoming the next president of Sierra Leone is not a decision for him to make.
According to him, that decision lies in the hands of the ruling SLPP and the people. For now, he says his priority is to focus on the energy sector work that President Julius Maada Bio has tasked him with.
During a media discussion program, Yumkella explained that he wants to complete the job he has been given before any other political consideration is made. He made it clear that discussions about leadership or a future role should come only after his current responsibilities are fulfilled. Once that is done, he believes it will be up to the SLPP and the people to decide whether he should continue in governance or take on another technical role.
Yumkella, who contested in the 2018 presidential elections as the candidate for the National Grand Coalition (NGC), reflected on that period, stating that after losing, he did not disappear or withdraw from public service. Unlike others who may have stepped back after an election loss, he remained present in national politics.
Following the 2018 elections, he returned to Parliament and continued playing an active role. Later, he was invited to join the Executive Branch, where he currently serves. He pointed to this journey as an example of resilience and commitment to national duty.
He also expressed confidence in the work he has been doing, particularly in the energy sector, suggesting that the results are already becoming visible. Yumkella noted that in due time, Sierra Leoneans will be able to compare what he has accomplished in just two years with what others may have done in eight or more. He believes performance and delivery will eventually speak for themselves.
At this stage, Yumkella has not confirmed any political plans. He says his current focus remains on the assignment he is handling, and any future role will depend on the decision of the SLPP and the people of Sierra Leone.
