The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has announced that the registration process for both national and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for the 2026-2027 period will officially begin on January 12, 2026.

In a press release dated January 6, 2026, the Ministry said the exercise is part of its mandate to regulate and coordinate the operations of NGOs in Sierra Leone. According to the statement, all registrations will be conducted exclusively online through the Ministry’s official NGO registration portal at ngorp.moped.gov.sl.

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development stated that all NGOs operating in Sierra Leone are required to renew their registration status in order to continue operating legally in the country. The Ministry emphasized that failure to comply with the registration and renewal requirements could affect an organisation’s ability to operate.

The press release further noted that NGOs seeking registration or renewal must meet specific preconditions before certificates can be issued. These include registration with relevant local councils in their areas of operation, possession of a valid tax clearance certificate, a National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) registration certificate, and signed service level agreements with relevant line ministries.

As part of efforts to strengthen accountability, the Ministry disclosed that a nationwide verification of NGO offices will be carried out in January and February 2026 to confirm their physical existence and operational status. The Ministry said only registered NGOs will be gazetted following the completion of the process.

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development also announced that the deadline for NGO registration renewal is June 30, 2026.

For further enquiries or clarification, the Ministry advised organisations to contact the NGO Directorate at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development or visit its offices at the NAO Building, Tower Hill, Freetown, during official working hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
