Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu, welcomed Madam Lihong Shen, the newly appointed UN Security Advisor for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, to discuss enhancing collaboration between the UN and the Sierra Leone Police.

The meeting was held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess at Kingtom Police Barracks. In his opening remarks, IGP Sellu expressed gratitude to the outgoing Security Adviser and UNDSS Representative, Mr. Dumba Jatoe, for his commendable service.

He acknowledged the exceptional security support provided by the Sierra Leone Police during Mr. Jatoe’s tenure, which spanned eighteen countries. “Your collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police has been overwhelming,” Mr. Jatoe remarked, reflecting on the fruitful partnership established over the years.

Madam Shen’s visit was met with enthusiasm as IGP Sellu emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with the UN. He assured her of the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of UN personnel operating within the country. “We are dedicated to fostering a positive working environment for all UN staff in Sierra Leone,” he stated.

During the discussions, IGP Sellu urged Madam Shen to consider the perspectives of the Sierra Leone Police in her security planning, despite her temporary assignment in the country. He asserted the ongoing collaborative efforts with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), particularly in reforming the Sierra Leone Police to transition from a force-oriented approach to a service-oriented institution.

The IGP reiterated the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the UN, emphasising the need for mutual cooperation to create a safer environment for all. “Together, we can ensure a secure and peaceful Sierra Leone,” he concluded.
