The sudden postponement of the Section Chief election in Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom has left residents seething with anger and frustration. The election, which was set to take place past Saturday, was halted at the eleventh hour, leaving many feeling disenfranchised and betrayed.
“It is a clear case of political interference,” said Foday Kamara, a resident of Kholifa Mabang. “We were ready to elect our own leaders, but the politicians are stopping us. They don’t want us to have a say in our own affairs.”
According to Paramount Chief Bai Kurr Kuhrahray II, the District Officer ordered the elections to be postponed because there are issues to be rectified.
The decision to postpone the election has sparked widespread outrage, with many residents taking to social media to express their discontent. “This is a dark day for Kholifa Mabang,” Mariama Sesay, a resident, said. “We demand transparency and accountability. Why was the election stopped?”
Residents are accusing politicians of trying to undermine the authority of Paramount Chief PC Bai Kurr Kuhrahray II, who they say is being targeted for his independence. “The chief is being punished for not playing ball,” said Alhaji Conteh, a local businessman. “He defeated the politicians’ preferred candidates, and now they are trying to bring him down.”
The postponement has also raised concerns about the government’s commitment to democracy and decentralisation. “This is a setback for our democracy,” said Abu BakarSesay, another resident. “The people of Kholifa Mabang have a right to choose their own leaders, and this right is being denied.”
As tensions continue to rise, residents are calling for the immediate conduct of the Section Chief election. “We will not be silenced,” said Fatu Koroma, a women’s leader. “We demand our rights, and we will fight for them.”
