On Thursday, December 12, 2024, the Road Safety Committee convened at the Bo City Council Chamber in the Bo Government Reservation to address pressing traffic and road safety issues.
The meeting, chaired by James Aruna, Head of Station for the Road Safety Corps in Bo City, brought together 27 stakeholders from critical institutions.
In his opening remarks, Aruna reaffirmed the Committee’s dedication to improving road safety and creating a secure environment for all road users. Secretary Mustapha Kpaka, representing Civil Society Organizations, presented the minutes of the previous meeting and documented attendees’ suggestions.
District Security Coordinator Swahibu Koroma of the Office of National Security (ONS) commended the involvement of security forces in the Committee’s work and urged intensified efforts to reduce accidents. “The life you save today could be your own,” he stressed.
Law enforcement representatives, including Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO) Allen P. Cooper from Bo West and Inspector Mohamed B. Mansaray from Bo East, along with Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohamed Kabba Conteh, highlighted the importance of strict enforcement to ensure road safety.
Deputy Mayor of Bo City Council, Mrs. Hawa Campbell, expressed the Council’s commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting development. She outlined plans to transform Bo City into a model of progress and safety.
Key issues discussed included overspeeding by tipper truck drivers, poor vehicle maintenance leading to fatal accidents, inadequate lighting on trucks, illegal garages and parking spaces, and street trading obstructing major roads. These challenges have significantly contributed to traffic congestion and accidents in the city.
To address these issues, the Committee proposed repainting zebra crossings on principal streets to enhance pedestrian safety and improve the city’s aesthetics. Other resolutions included enforcing vehicle maintenance standards, cracking down on illegal garages, and regulating street trading.
Stakeholders emphasized collaboration and compliance to ensure the success of these measures. “Saving lives and making our roads safer is a shared responsibility,” members reiterated as the meeting concluded.
The Committee’s actions aim to mitigate road safety risks and create a safer, more organized urban environment in Bo City.
