The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Sierra Leone and Guinea, His Excellency Alexey V. Popov, on Thursday 11th January 2024 presented copies of his Letters of Credence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Musa Timothy Kabba at his Tower Hill office, Freetown.

During his presentation, Ambassador Popov recalled the 62 years of strong bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and Russia, while reiterating his government’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s transformative projects.
The Russian Ambassador said that Russia is ready to open a permanent Embassy in Freetown to further enhance trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.

He commended the Government of Sierra Leone for winning a seat in the non-permanent category in the United Nations Security Council for the period 2024-2025 as it shows the progress the country is making globally.

He assured Russia continued support to Sierra Leone’s Human Capacity Development drive by awarding more scholarships to deserving Sierra Leoneans.

Receiving the letters, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Musa Timothy Kabba thanked the Russian Federation for the long-standing friendly ties between the two great nations. He congratulated the Ambassador-designate on his appointment. Minister Musa applauded the decision of the Russian Federation to open a full embassy here in Freetown.

Minister Kabba said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will engage both the Attorney General and Minister of Justice’s office and the Sierra Leone Embassy in Russia to finalize key Memorandum of Understanding and cooperative frameworks between both countries for mutual benefits.

He thanked the Russian Federation for supporting the Sierra Leone government with student scholarships over the years which he said contributes to the Human Capital development of the country.
