The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA) has officially unveiled a Safe Home for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Koinadugu District, marking a major step in strengthening survivor-centered response services and protection mechanisms in the region.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Ministry’s Chief Director, Mr. Charles Vandi; the Permanent Secretary, Madam Aminata Y. Sannoh; and the GBV National Coordinator, following an invitation from the District GBV Steering Committee on behalf of the Honourable Minister and the Ministry at the national level. Their presence underscored the government’s firm commitment to combating GBV and expanding access to essential services for survivors.

The Safe Home was funded primarily by Medicos Del Mondo, an international non-governmental organization operating in Koinadugu District. The initiative was implemented under the leadership of the Ministry’s Assistant Director, with strong coordination from the District GBV Steering Committee and technical support from MoGCA’s national team. Through strategic collaboration and sustained stakeholder engagement, the facility has now been successfully established.
Designed to offer temporary shelter, psychosocial support, and referral services, the Safe Home aims to ensure the safety, dignity, healing, and empowerment of survivors. The facility will serve vulnerable populations across Koinadugu and neighbouring Falaba District, reinforcing national efforts to eliminate GBV and create protective environments for women and children.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Honourable Minister, Chief Director Mr. Charles Vandi highlighted the progress made by MoGCA in GBV prevention and response across the country. He referenced the range of laws, policies, and institutional frameworks established to address GBV. He noted that Safe Homes remain a critical component of the Ministry’s response strategy to restore hope and resilience among survivors. He encouraged stakeholders to promote positive parenting and emphasized that addressing GBV requires a multisectoral approach.
In her goodwill message, Permanent Secretary Madam Aminata Y. Sannoh expressed appreciation to partners and stakeholders whose contributions made the Safe Home possible. She stressed the importance of partnership and sustainability, noting that GBV response is resource-intensive and demands collective responsibility. She reaffirmed MoGCA’s commitment to continued collaboration with all partners supporting the Government’s GBV response agenda.
Commitment statements were delivered by key stakeholders, including the District Council, the Local Unit Commander (LUC), the District Medical Officer (DMO), the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Koinadugu Women’s Development Network (KWDN), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and representatives of the Paramount Chief. The event concluded with the official unveiling of the Safe Home by the Permanent Secretary in the presence of district stakeholders.
MoGCA extended sincere appreciation to Medicos Del Mondo, the District Council, KWDN, Amnet, Hospital Management, and the entire GBV Steering Committee for their invaluable support in bringing this critical intervention to fruition for the people of Koinadugu and Falaba Districts.
