Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has clarified President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to creating 500,000 jobs, noting that the target was never restricted to office-based employment but covers opportunities across all sectors of the economy.

According to Dr. Sengeh, two major areas where the government has already generated significant employment are agriculture and construction. However, he acknowledged a growing challenge: a shortage of young people willing and adequately skilled to take up these jobs.

In Tonkolili District, he disclosed that some contractors have resorted to hiring labour from correctional facilities because many young people in Magburaka were unwilling to engage in construction work. A similar situation exists in the Pendembu area, where the Paramount Chief described the local workforce as “self-sufficient agricultural workers.” As a result, construction companies there have been compelled to import skilled labour from Ghana, particularly for welding, electrical installations, and high-quality finishing works.

Dr. Sengeh noted that these challenges reinforce the government’s emphasis on human capital development, a central pillar of President Bio’s agenda.

He stressed that Sierra Leoneans must be equipped with the right skills to participate effectively in the evolving global economy, including industrial, agrarian, digital, and manufacturing sectors.
