The Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has expressed a good spirit for his engagement with District Mammy Queens representing twelve districts across the nation.

The meeting was reportedly held on Wednesday, 5th March, 2025 at the State House of Sierra Leone. The Chief Minister expressly admitted that female community leaders play a crucial role in promoting inclusion and driving national development.

During the meeting, he said the Mammy Queens discussed their efforts to create terms of reference, policy recommendations, and potential legislation aimed at empowering women and girls throughout Sierra Leone.

Dr. Sengeh explained that he expressed strong support for their initiatives, emphasizing their alignment with President Bio’s commitment to gender equality and inclusion.

The Chief Minister further stated that the Mammy Queens recalled the historical impact of women like Madam Yoko, whom he said advocated for women’s rights long before the onset of colonization.

Dr. Sengeh maintained that their message highlighted the importance of recognizing local traditions and cultural practices that have long championed women’s rights, rather than attributing the ideals solely to Western influences.

Dr. Sengeh noted that the Mammy Queens’ efforts build upon the legacy of foundational leaders, such as Sir Milton Margai, the founder of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), whom he said collaborated with female traditional leaders to enhance health and education in rural areas.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls across all communities, stating, “We are only continuing that which is rooted in our culture and tradition.” He concluded with a promise of dedication to ensuring that all girls and women have access to the opportunities they deserve.
