Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has solidified his dedication to public service following an April Fool’s Day prank that triggered a wave of concern from supporters worldwide.

Sengeh’s Facebook post, jokingly announcing his resignation from politics, elicited an overwhelming response from friends, family, and supporters both within and outside Sierra Leone. The Chief Minister expressed surprise at the outpouring of emotion.

“I’ve never seen people plead with a politician to stay a politician,” Sengeh remarked, noting that some individuals were even moved to tears by the prospect of his departure.

Adding a spiritual dimension to his response, Dr. Sengeh referenced a prayer session at State House where the sermon drew from Psalm 62:11: “God has spoken once; twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God.” He emphasized his reliance on divine strength in his leadership role.

“The only power I pray for is the power of God,” Sengeh stated, assuring the public of his unwavering commitment. “Because it is only God’s power that enables me to serve Him and His people.”

Concluding his message, Dr. Sengeh reassured the public that his dedication remains steadfast, affirming, “We’ve only gotten started.” This statement signals his intent to continue his work in public service, despite the temporary alarm caused by his April Fool’s joke.
