Chief Minister, David Moinina Sengeh has supported the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Eastern Region building project with One Hundred bags of cement.

The SLAJ Eastern Region Secretariat building, located on Maada Bio Street in Kenema, is a landmark initiative championed by the region’s Chairperson, Ms. Victoria Vanday Bernard, as part of her manifesto promises.

Speaking on the essence of supporting such a project, Chief Minister Dr. Sengeh emphasised the crucial role of the media in Sierra Leone’s democratic and developmental processes.

“A strong and independent media is the backbone of our democracy. Investing in infrastructure that strengthens journalism in the regions is a step towards enhancing press freedom and promoting responsible journalism,” he stated. He further encouraged other stakeholders to support SLAJ’s efforts in empowering the media across the country.

Receiving the donations, Ms. Victoria Bernard expressed profound gratitude to the Chief Minister for his generous contributions.

“This project represents a legacy for journalists in the Eastern Region. The support we are receiving is a testament to the value people place on a free and vibrant press. I am truly grateful for the encouragement and assistance we continue to receive,” she said.

SLAJ President, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla hailed the donations as timely and instrumental in ensuring the project is completed ahead of SLAJ’s elective congress in June.

“This building is a testament to what passion and dedication can achieve. It will serve as a hub for journalists in the Eastern Region, fostering professionalism and media development. We deeply appreciate the Chief Minister for his invaluable support,” he remarked.

Secretary General of SLAJ East, Mr. Abdul Rahman Sissay, also called for continued support from well-meaning individuals and institutions to help finalize the project within the stipulated time frame. “We are determined to unveil this building before the end of our tenure. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us closer to that goal,” he added.

The project has garnered widespread support from both local and national stakeholders, reinforcing its importance to media development in Sierra Leone.

Once completed, the building will be named the Victoria Bernard Building in honor of her relentless efforts in mobilising resources and spearheading the initiative.
