Health authorities in Sierra Leone have reported a significant increase in MPox cases, according to the latest update released Friday, April 18, 2025, at 3:00 PM local time.
The data from the National Public Health Agency indicates 53 new MPox cases have been recorded. Tragically, the update also confirms one new death attributed to the virus.
This surge brings the total confirmed cumulative cases to 426. Currently, there are 275 active cases across the country. While the number of new recoveries stands at 56, the total number of recovered individuals is now 147. The total death toll from the disease has risen to 4.
The geographical distribution of the new cases reveals that Western Urban continues to be the most affected region, with 338 total confirmed cases, including a notable increase reflected in the 61 cases reported in Western Rural.
Port Loko has also seen a rise, now with a total of 7 confirmed cases. Other districts with confirmed cases include Bo (4), Kenema (2), Kambia (1), Karene (1), Tonkolili (3), and Moyamba (2). Notably, Bonthe, Bombali, Falaba, Kailahun, Kono, Koinadugu, and Pujehun have not reported any confirmed cases.
Gender-wise, out of the total confirmed cases, 162 are female and 264 are male.
In response to the ongoing situation, a public health emergency was declared for mpox on January 16, 2025, aimed at rapidly containing the outbreak and safeguarding public health.
Mpox is a viral disease caused by an orthopoxvirus, primarily spreading through close contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever, and in severe cases, the disease can be fatal.
The National Public Health Agency urges the public to remain vigilant and utilize the toll-free number 117 to report any suspected cases or for further information.
