The Sierra Leone National Bakers Union (SLENABU) has assured the public that flour will be available to bake bread throughout the month of Ramadan and beyond, despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The Bakers Union made this statement on a press release issued on Wednesday 9 March 2022.

“The Sierra Leone National Bakers Union (SLENABU) wishes to inform its membership and the General Public that due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the current crisis between Russia and Ukraine there is an acute shortage of Flour across Europe and Africa. As a result there is increment in the price of wheat in the world market and that phenomenon has affected us greatly as a nation,” they stated.

SLENBU noted that they have engaged the Management of the Sierra Leone Flour Mill to make sure that there is availability of flour in the market.

“During the engagement, the Management of the Sierra Leone Flour Mill assured the Sierra Leone National Baker Union that Flour is going to be available throughout this coming Holy Month of Ramadan (Fast Month) and beyond,” the Union stated.

The Holy of Month of Ramadan will start early next month and there have been fears that that war in Ukraine, which is the world leading producer of wheat and flour bread will affect the production of bread in Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone National Bakers Union however encouraged the public and its members to exercise patient as they are working with the Government and all authorities concerned to make sure that there is no shortage of flour across the country.
