Sierra Leone marked a new chapter in its legal landscape with the official launch of the Criminal Procedure Act 2024, a landmark legislation aimed at modernizing and strengthening the country’s justice system.

The launch ceremony, held at the High Court in Freetown, brought together leaders from the judiciary, executive, and law enforcement, all committed to delivering a more efficient and equitable legal framework for citizens.

Speaking at the event, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, described the Act as the culmination of a “20-year journey,” acknowledging the sustained dedication of stakeholders who worked tirelessly to bring it into law. He emphasized that the new legislation will enhance efficiency within the justice system and pledged to oversee its implementation personally to ensure it benefits all Sierra Leoneans.

Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, welcomed the Act, calling its launch “a historic day” for the nation. He revealed that police officers across the country have undergone training to familiarize themselves with the new provisions, equipping investigators and prosecutors with the tools to handle cases effectively under the updated framework.

Chief Justice Komba Kamanda praised the Act for its recognition of human rights principles and alignment with international standards. He expressed confidence that the legislation will usher in a more just and transparent era and urged all stakeholders to collaborate to ensure its successful implementation.

The ceremony concluded with a performance by the Sierra Leone Police Band, symbolizing the beginning of what officials describe as a transformative period for the nation’s justice system.
