The Third Africa High-Level Forum on South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development is underway in Freetown, drawing attention to the need for transformative reforms in global governance.
The forum, taking place from May 7 to 9, 2025, at the International Conference Centre, brings together a diverse group of policymakers, youth leaders, and representatives from NGOs across Africa and the Global South.
In his opening address, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio articulated the urgent need for systemic changes in global economic frameworks, which he labeled as outdated and unjust. He emphasized that the current global financial and trade systems marginalize African voices, calling for a reshaping of the international order to better reflect the needs and contributions of the Global South.
“Africa is not only invited to sit at the table—we are building the table and creating opportunities for ourselves,” President Bio asserted, receiving enthusiastic support from attendees. He underscored the importance of a platform that not only elevates African voices but also provides a pathway to sustainable solutions for the continent’s challenges.
Highlighting Sierra Leone’s own development initiatives, President Bio pointed to programs such as the Feed Salone initiative and the Youth Employment Scheme as examples of strategic, homegrown solutions aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The forum, organized by the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) in partnership with organizations like the Islamic Development Bank and USAID, serves as a critical space for discussing collaboration and mutual support among developing nations.
The Prime Minister of Algeria echoed President Bio’s call for enhanced South-South cooperation, emphasizing its role in fostering regional stability and economic integration.
