In a historic development for Sierra Leone’s aviation sector, the country has become the first to host the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) Pilot Implementation Project, a major step in the African Union’s efforts to establish a unified air transport market across the continent.

This milestone was achieved under the leadership of Madam Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA).

The SAATM initiative, launched by the African Union, aims to promote greater connectivity, trade, and economic growth within Africa by creating an integrated and competitive air transport network. Madam Barrie’s role in facilitating the pilot project has positioned Sierra Leone at the forefront of regional aviation integration efforts, making it a key player in the continent’s broader strategy to enhance intra-African travel.

“This is a pivotal moment for Sierra Leone’s aviation industry and for the African continent as a whole,” said Madam Barrie. “By hosting the SAATM pilot project, we are taking concrete steps toward aligning our aviation infrastructure and regulations with international standards, while improving the efficiency and affordability of air travel within Africa.”

Under Madam Barrie’s leadership, the SLCAA has been working to bolster the country’s aviation infrastructure and regulatory frameworks, ensuring they meet the goals of the SAATM. The project is expected to ease air travel between African countries, promoting stronger economic ties and furthering Sierra Leone’s potential as a regional air travel hub.

The implementation of SAATM is seen as a critical step in reducing barriers to air travel across Africa, boosting tourism, trade, and investment. Sierra Leone’s hosting of the pilot project elevates its international standing and showcases the country’s commitment to advancing African aviation integration.

Madam Barrie’s leadership in this initiative is being hailed as transformative, marking a significant moment in Sierra Leone’s aviation history.
