The Judiciary of Sierra Leone, led by Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Hon. Justice Ansumana Ivan Sesay at his Allen Town residence on Monday, December 30, 2024. Justice Sesay, a Judge remembered for his humility and dedication, passed away following a sudden illness.
In his remarks, Chief Justice Kamanda reflected on their long-standing relationship, which began during their university days and grew as they rose through the judiciary. Describing Justice Sesay as a “humble man with a good heart,” he recounted their close bond, saying, “Ivan was not just a friend but a brother whom I loved and had tremendous respect for.”
The Chief Justice highlighted Justice Sesay’s unwavering support and dedication to the judiciary. “When I was appointed Chief Justice, he assured me of his fullest support. Ivan was always willing to help, even without being called upon,” he said. Kamanda revealed that upon learning of Justice Sesay’s health crisis, he personally intervened to secure an ambulance for his transfer to Freetown and ensured he received the best possible care at Choithram Hospital.
Senior members of the judiciary, including Judges from the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, and Magistrates, joined the delegation to the Sesay family, underscoring the late Judge’s profound impact on the legal fraternity. “Because of his humility and love for all, we will ensure he is given a befitting burial,” Kamanda affirmed.
Colonel Kamara, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed gratitude for the judiciary’s efforts during Justice Sesay’s illness. “The Chief Justice and medical team did all they could to save him. If love and medical care were enough, my brother would still be alive,” he said.
Justice Ansumana Ivan Sesay will be laid to rest in his hometown near Rotifunk after Juma prayers on Friday, January 3, 2025. His passing marks a significant loss for Sierra Leone’s judiciary and legal community.
