A delegation from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Sierra Leone, led by its Minister, Princess Dugba, on Friday, 11th September, concluded a technical and Familiarisation tour of the Tema Port facilities in Ghana, after a courtesy visit to the Minister of Transport of Ghana, Joseph Bukari Nikpe.

Welcoming the delegation from Sierra Leone, the Minister of Transport expressed delight in receiving his colleague minister and team from Sierra Leone.

He said the visit is important because it creates an opportunity for both countries to learn from each other and adopt good practices and policies.

Minister Nikpe pledged his Ministry’s commitment to the delegation from Sierra Leone to ensure a successful visit, adding that only Africans can support each other in solving problems affecting Africans.

Speaking during the visit, Minister Dugba, thanked the minister and team for a warm welcome.

According to Minister Dugba, the visit to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is aimed at studying the development and management of Ghana’s ports and apply key lessons to Sierra Leone’s ongoing port projects.

Sierra Leone’s ongoing port project, she explained, is a 55 million-dollar fishing industrial port that is expected to be constructed and completed within the next two years, and it is a grant from the Chinese government.

She said that since Ghana has been operating its port facilities for years now, she believes such a visit will enable the team from the Ministry of Fisheries to also identify potential areas of technical cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Additionally, the project comprises a jetty, marine house, waste management, and a fish market. The industrial fishing port is expected to help Sierra Leone tap into the blue economy, create jobs, and reduce losses in the fishing sector.

The Sierra Leone delegation’s tour of the Tema ports included a brief meeting involving the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agare, Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Major General Paul SeiduTanye-Kulono, the delegation from Sierra Leone, and the High Commissioner of Sierra Leone in Ghana, Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba.

The tour focuses on exchanging knowledge on port upgrading, cargo managing, and sustainable fisheries logistics.
