Sierra Leone has been ranked as the third strongest merchant marine power in Africa for 2026, according to the latest data released by Business Insider Africa. The report places the country 32nd globally, behind only Liberia and Nigeria on the continent.

The ranking highlights Sierra Leone’s growing influence in global shipping and underscores its emergence as a key player in the West African “Blue Economy.” The country’s merchant fleet—made up of commercial tankers, cargo vessels, and container ships—has been identified as a major factor in strengthening its maritime profile.

Industry observers note that a strong merchant fleet serves as an important indicator of economic independence. By expanding its national fleet, Sierra Leone is retaining a larger share of profits from maritime trade while reducing long-term reliance on foreign shipping companies.

The 2026 ranking follows a series of strategic initiatives undertaken by the government to modernize maritime infrastructure and improve the country’s shipping capacity. These efforts are part of a broader national agenda to position Sierra Leone as a competitive hub in regional and international trade.

This progress also aligns with recent diplomatic engagements, including missions to Turkey, where the government outlined its ambition to transform Sierra Leone into a central trade gateway linking international industry with African markets.

With the 79th ECOWAS Summit expected in 2026 and continued expansion in the maritime sector, Sierra Leone is steadily strengthening its position in African trade and logistics, signaling its rise as an emerging force in global shipping.
