Sierra Leone is poised to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in August 2024. This marks the country’s return to the prestigious role after a 53-year absence.

The decision, made on June 6, 2022, saw Sierra Leone receive support from 188 of the 193 UN member states, reflecting the international community’s respect for the small West African nation.

Sierra Leone will join other countries such as Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, and Slovenia, which are also part of the UNSC for the month. During its presidency, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio will lead a historic debate focusing on Africa’s push for reform within the UNSC. The debate will underscore the continent’s call for changes to enhance the Council’s effectiveness and representativeness.

The presidency of the UNSC rotates among its members in alphabetical order of member states, with each country holding the position for one calendar month. Sierra Leone’s upcoming presidency is a notable milestone, highlighting the country’s growing influence in international diplomacy and its commitment to addressing global peace and security issues.
