An 11-year-old girl from Sierra Leone has been rescued following a harrowing shipwreck near the Italian island of Lampedusa.
Found clinging to tyre tubes and wearing a life jacket, the child was one of 45 people aboard a boat that sank during a storm after departing from Sfax, Tunisia, according to reports from DW Africa.
The German rescue charity CompassCollective discovered the girl during a separate operation and transported her to Lampedusa, where she received immediate medical attention. Italian Red Cross personnel are currently providing care for the young survivor.
This incident highlights the ongoing migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, where thousands attempt perilous sea crossings in hopes of reaching Europe. The tragedy underscores the need for coordinated international measures to address unsafe migration routes and strengthen rescue efforts.
Humanitarian organizations and activists have repeatedly called for enhanced search-and-rescue operations, legal migration pathways, and measures to stabilize regions driving migration. Without such initiatives, the Mediterranean risks remaining a graveyard for those seeking safety and opportunity.
