In a landmark reconciliation, Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has successfully brokered peace between long-time rivals in the country’s music industry, Amara Denis Turay (Kao Denero) and Alhaji Amadu Bah (Boss LAJ).
The truce marks a significant milestone for Sierra Leone’s entertainment sector and its role in fostering unity among the youth.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Sengeh highlighted the strategic appointments made by President Julius Maada Bio, recognizing the influence of the entertainment industry.
“When President Bio appointed Kao as Entertainment Ambassador in 2022, he did it because he understood the value of entertainment to the youth and the people of Sierra Leone,” Dr. Sengeh noted. “Similarly, LAJ was made a Peace Ambassador in 2023, reflecting the President’s understanding of the critical link between peace, entertainment, and youth engagement.”
The historic reconciliation saw both musicians pledge their commitment to unity, cohesion, and the betterment of the entertainment industry. The Chief Minister emphasized the deep connections he shares with both artists, stating, “These two brothers and I have a direct link, and I believe in them. Today, we all collectively reaffirmed our commitment to peace, unity, cohesion, and entertainment.”
Dr. Sengeh also issued a call to action for fans of the two artists, urging them to emulate the newfound harmony between Kao and LAJ. “If you love LAJ and if you love Kao, your commitment should be to promote peace and harmony—not just between them but within yourselves and for the country,” he said.
This reconciliation is seen as a major step towards reducing tension within the entertainment industry and leveraging its power to unite Sierra Leoneans. Dr. Sengeh concluded with an optimistic vision, saying, “It is only when there’s more peace, unity, freedom, and justice that together #WeWillDeliver.”
Kao Denero and Boss LAJ have long been icons of Sierra Leone’s music scene, but their rivalry has fueled divisions among their respective fan bases. Observers believe this reconciliation could have far-reaching implications for the country’s cultural and social landscape.
