A joint security operation at the Jendema Customs Complex on Friday, November 29, 2024, led to the interception of a locally fabricated shotgun concealed under a motorbike seat, underscoring Sierra Leone’s dedication to border security.
The firearm was discovered around 9:00 AM during a routine search of an unregistered red TVS Star Sport motorbike carrying two Liberian nationals, Aron Sambai and Morris Sonbala. The suspects, residents of Tennie Town, were en route to Liberia when the weapon was found. Both men denied ownership of the shotgun, engaging in mutual accusations at the scene.
The suspects were transferred to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) South in Bo City for further investigation. Detective Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Titus Vandy assured the public of a comprehensive inquiry.
“We are leveraging all resources to build a strong case against the suspects,” DSP Vandy stated, adding that Detective Police Constable Bundu A.P. is spearheading the investigation under his supervision.
The case is expected to be presented in court soon.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, Regional Police Commander South, commended the joint security team for their swift action.
“This operation reflects our commitment to securing our borders and maintaining peace,” AIG Kanneh said, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in preventing smuggling and illegal firearms trafficking.
The Jendema border crossing, a key trade and travel hub between Sierra Leone and Liberia, remains a focal point for illegal activities. The seizure of the firearm highlights ongoing efforts by security forces to address these challenges and bolster regional stability.
DSP Vandy urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing the critical role of public support in combating crime.
The successful operation serves as a strong reminder of Sierra Leone’s resolve to secure its borders and protect its citizens. Authorities have assured the public that justice will be pursued with diligence as the investigation progresses.
