A joint security team from the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) intercepted a vehicle transporting suspected stolen livestock during a routine checkpoint at Mile 38.
The operation, led by Superintendent Foday Sorie Fofanah, took place at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2026. The vehicle, registration number AUS 917, was driven by Abass Kanu of JB Drive, Campbell Town, Waterloo, with Abdulai Kabia of Lunsar as a passenger.
Officers discovered four animals — two sheep and two goats — three alive and one dead, all with their mouths tied and without identification marks or branding.
During preliminary questioning, Abdulai Kabia reportedly admitted to stealing the animals from the Port Loko area. He claimed that two of the stolen animals had already been dropped off near the checkpoint and that the remaining cattle were being transported to Waterloo for business purposes.
Both suspects were arrested for failing to provide proper livestock permits and receipts, and for giving inconsistent statements. They are currently detained at the Mile 38 Police Station pending further investigation.
Statements have been collected from the suspects and checkpoint personnel. The Livestock Officer at Mile 38, Mr. Joseph Kanu, has been informed, and the recovered animals have been handed over to the relevant authorities while efforts continue to identify the rightful owners.
