The Director of Communications, Myk Berewa, has explained the reasons for the visit of popular nigerian influencer Jadrolita, often known as Javis, to schools in Sierra Leone to positively inspire the children and fight bad social media behavior.

With regard to the rumors circulating on social media about Javis, Berewa clarified that Javis was not invited by the Sierra Leone government, nor paid huge amount of money.

“Jadrolita, also known as Javis, wasn’t invited by the Sierra Leone government nor paid $52,000 for a school tour. Be cautious social media often showcases things done merely for likes and attention” He said.

On social media, he warned people to be cautious of false information. “some things are done merely for likes and attention.”

Berewa said, “We’ve observed social media has grown more toxic in our nation.” “We don’t want to divert and mislead our younger generation, and it’s no longer being used constructively.”

Berewa said that the decision to invite Javis, came after conducting survey and found out that she is a school-age teen and one of the most followed influencers in the world. Her relatability, huge fan base, and inspirational story played a great role in her selection.

Berewa said that Javis is a girl who had previously undergone surgery to remove a facial tumor.

“Javis went through a life-changing experience. She overcame her obstacles by using social media to promote her studies, help her family, and improve herself. This is the kind of constructive use of digital platforms that we wish to encourage among young people in Sierra Leone” He said.

Berewa clarified that impact, reach, and relevance were their main considerations when asked why influencers in Sierra Leone weren’t selected instead.

“We are not saying our local talents are not good. In fact, we have many who are more talented than Javis. But we must look at what relates with teens right now, and she does,” he said.

Javis will also be holding Master classes with TikTok influencers during her visit, where she will likely impart knowledge on media literacy, digital responsibility, and content creation.

Berewa also talked about the bad portrayal of Sierra Leone on the internet, saying that search results on the internet are frequently dominated by negative content.

“When you search for Sierra Leone, the majority of the results are negative since social media is algorithm-driven. Our goal is to change that narrative.”

He encouraged everyone to support the idea of bringing Javis into the country saying that anybody who can motivate and encourage young people should be embraced, no matter where they are from.
