An 18-year-old girl from Sierra Leone reportedly fell victim to a human trafficking scheme after traveling to Nigeria under the pretext of pursuing a career in Nollywood.

The incident has circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the ongoing risks faced by young people seeking opportunities abroad.

In an interview with Nigerian social media influencer, Very Dark Man, the teenager recounted how she met a woman several times while selling cakes. The woman, who was a regular customer, allegedly offered her the chance to become a Nollywood actress in Nigeria. She instructed the girl to keep the opportunity secret, including from her own family.

The girl revealed that the woman transported approximately ten Sierra Leoneans to various countries, including Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria, dropping some along the way. Only three of the group reportedly made it to Nigeria.

Upon arrival, however, the woman’s intentions allegedly shifted, and the girl said she was pressured into prostitution. She resisted and was then asked to reimburse the cost of her flight, prompting her to escape and seek assistance.

The teenager reportedly approached the Sierra Leone Embassy in Nigeria for repatriation. According to her, the embassy informed her that there were no funds available to facilitate her return. Following this, she contacted the Nigerian social media influencer, who reportedly promised to help arrange her return to Sierra Leone.

This case notably reflects the persistent risks of human trafficking and exploitation targeting young people seeking work or career opportunities abroad. Authorities and advocacy groups continue to urge families and communities to be vigilant and for young people to verify opportunities before traveling internationally.
