The U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Bryan David Hunt, held a crucial meeting today with the National Executive of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party at the APC Party Headquarters in Freetown.

This closed-door gathering revolved around the APC’s decision to abstain from participation in governance.

Following the meeting, the U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone provided an update on the discussions with the APC Leadership through a tweet. The tweet stated:

Ambassador Hunt met with APC leadership at their party headquarters for a courtesy call this morning. On the eve of the mediated dialogue, we discussed the importance of constructive participation with a view to making progress on democratic reforms that will benefit the Sierra Leonean people.”

This meeting takes place in the midst of preparations for a national dialogue scheduled between the Government of Sierra Leone and the main opposition APC. The APC’s decision to refrain from engaging in governance activities stems from allegations of election fraud during the recently concluded June 24 elections.

The forthcoming national dialogue holds significant importance as it aims to address critical issues and foster constructive engagement between the government and the opposition. The discussions seek to pave the way for democratic reforms that will serve the best interests of the Sierra Leonean people, ensuring transparency, fairness, and progress in the nation’s political landscape.
