The United States diplomatic mission in Sierra Leone has entered a transition phase following the resignation of Ambassador David Bryan Hunt.

Confidential sources confirmed to Truth Media that Ambassador Hunt formally submitted his resignation to then-U.S. President Donald J. Trump and will not be returning to Freetown to complete his tenure.

Leadership at the U.S. Embassy in Freetown has now shifted to Chargé d’Affaires Yancey, who is serving as the acting head of mission.

In a letter shared with friends and colleagues, Ambassador Hunt explained the personal factors behind his decision. He wrote:

“It is with a heavy heart that I wanted to share with you that I submitted my resignation as Ambassador to Sierra Leone earlier today to President Trump and will not be returning to Freetown.”

He described the decision as unexpected and difficult, noting the deep appreciation he and his spouse, Haroon, hold for their time in Sierra Leone:

This was not an easy decision and a very unexpected one, as Haroon and I have loved every moment of our time with you and have an enduring admiration for the work that each of you do to advance the U.S.-Sierra Leone relationship.”

Ambassador Hunt further cited his father’s recent triple bypass surgery as a driving factor in his decision to return home to Virginia:

“That said, a number of personal factors, including my father’s unexpected triple bypass surgery last week, necessitate that I be closer to home in Virginia at this time.”

He expressed regret at not being able to bid farewell in person but conveyed confidence in the ongoing work of the Embassy:

“I deeply regret that I will not be able to bid farewell to all of you in person but rest assured that your work has been nothing short of inspirational. I am confident that under the leadership of Chargé Yancey and the rest of the mission’s outstanding Country Team, our important work to promote American security, safety, and economic prosperity will continue.”

Diplomatic analysts note that such resignations often stem from a mix of personal and professional considerations. Ambassador Hunt had played a key role in strengthening U.S.-Sierra Leone relations, focusing on governance reform, health, education, and security cooperation. His departure leaves questions about the future direction of U.S. diplomatic priorities in the country.
