The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of journalist Samuel Brima Mattia. The principal suspect, Joseph M. Lamin, who is the Station Manager of VOPAD Radio 96.5FM, has confessed to orchestrating the crime.

According to police reports, Lamin admitted to hiring individuals, including one identified as Morlai, to carry out the killing of his deputy, Samuel Brima Mattia. Authorities have confirmed the swift arrest of the alleged hired killers, who are now cooperating with the on-going investigation.

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has praised the police for their decisive action in the case and emphasized the importance of justice being served. “We commend the SLP for their diligent efforts and will continue to monitor the case to ensure accountability,” SLAJ said in a statement.

The motive behind the killing and further details of the investigation has not yet been disclosed. The SLP has assured the public of their commitment to uncovering all aspects of the crime and bringing those responsible to justice.

This development comes amid growing calls for the protection of journalists in Sierra Leone, with SLAJ and other organizations advocating for stronger measures to safeguard press freedom and ensure accountability for crimes against media professionals.

Further updates on the case are expected as investigations continue.
