The Kenema Old Students Association (KOSA) has reportedly taken the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Sierra Leone to court over the cancellation of the 2025 WASSCE result of a top-performing student, Unpha Lamin Koroma.

The legal action, filed by KOSA’s lawyer, Pa-Momo Fofanah, follows a series of events surrounding the withholding and subsequent cancellation of results belonging to more than 50 candidates, including Koroma, from the Government Secondary School Kenema.

According to a statement issued by KOSA’s National Secretary General, Ibrahim Fayia Sawaneh, the association and the school administration had earlier written to WAEC after the 2025 WASSCE results were released with several results withheld “without any explanation.” The letter requested a fair review and publication of the affected results.

In response, WAEC informed the association that it was investigating alleged examination malpractices and would communicate its findings upon conclusion. However, KOSA stated that after the review process, all the withheld results, including Koroma’s, were released “unconditionally without any trace or evidence of wrongdoing.

The association further noted that weeks after the release, WAEC “unilaterally without any explanation whatsoever” cancelled Koroma’s result. The result, as initially published on WAEC’s website, indicated that Koroma was the best candidate in the 2025 WASSCE, achieving six A1 grades, two B2s, and one B3.

KOSA maintains that the cancellation lacked transparency and due process, prompting the decision to seek legal redress. “As an Association and School, we believe in the justice system of this country and that is the reason why we’re in Court,” Sawaneh stated.

The matter is now before the court, with KOSA seeking clarity and accountability over the actions taken by WAEC regarding the student’s result. WAEC has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit at the time of reporting.
