Residents of Daru township are calling for increased security measures and better street lighting following a reported spike in nighttime harassment and “chasing” incidents that have left the community on edge.
In a formal appeal submitted to Sierraloaded, concerned resident Mustapha Abdul Aruna detailed a growing pattern of disturbances occurring during late hours. According to the correspondence, several individuals have been targeted or pursued at night, generating widespread fear among locals who must commute or move about the township for work and personal reasons.
“Many community members have expressed worry about their safety, as these incidents seem to be increasing,” Aruna wrote in the appeal. “The lack of proper lighting in certain areas and limited security presence during late hours may be contributing factors.”
The plea for intervention comes just weeks after the township was rocked by the tragic death of Sallu Moina Kanneh, the Finance Officer of the Ndomakeh Federation. Kanneh was reported missing on March 11 after leaving his Daru home for early morning prayers around 5 a.m. His body was discovered days later on March 17 in a river at nearby Sasahun village. The Daru Police Division has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of his death but has not yet released further details.
The recent appeal highlights a renewed sense of vulnerability in the Jawie Chiefdom community. Aruna urged local authorities and stakeholders to investigate the nighttime harassment reports and take immediate action to bolster security.
“The people of Daru deserve to feel safe in their own community, both during the day and at night,” the appeal stated.
Residents are hopeful that raising awareness will prompt a swift response to improve lighting infrastructure and increase police patrols in the township.
