Hon. Alpha Kanu, Presidential Spokesman for President Julius Maada Bio, has publicly claimed that he was a leading figure in the formation of the National Reformation Movement (NRM), a youth-oriented reform faction within the opposition All People’s Congress (APC).
Speaking on AYV’s Hot Seat program on Wednesday, April 8, Kanu stated that his involvement was intended to facilitate a generational shift within his former party.
“I led the formation of the NRM for the young APC members to take charge of the party, but they were late to take actions,” Kanu said during the television broadcast. He framed the initiative as a deliberate effort to empower younger members to push for internal reforms and assume leadership roles, though he noted that their hesitation limited the movement’s immediate political impact.
Kanu is a former senior APC official who previously held prominent ministerial and party leadership roles. He has remained an outspoken commentator on political affairs since crossing the aisle to serve as a presidential adviser and spokesman in the current Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) administration.
The NRM is widely recognized within Sierra Leonean politics as an internal APC faction that has consistently advocated for structural changes, internal democratization, and greater youth participation in party governance.
Kanu’s public admission effectively places a current administration official at the genesis of an opposition reform movement. Following the broadcast, political observers anticipate that the current APC leadership may move quickly to clarify the party’s official stance on the NRM and rebut any suggestions of outside or coordinated internal organizing.
