Members of Parliament representing Sierra Leone’s main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) were absent for the first Parliamentary session after the June multitier election.

The 6th Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone held its first session after the June 23 elections on Tuesday, 18 July, 2023.

Almost all of the Members of Parliament present were from the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and Paramount Chiefs representing the 16 Districts of the country.

The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Parliamentarians were not in attendance for the first session.

Their absence is attributed to earlier vow made by the party’s elders to boycott government and governance due to disagreement over election results with the Electoral Committee for Sierra Leone (ECSL).

The party urged the ECSL to release election results by polling centres.

Results announced by the ECSL saw the incumbent Julius Maada Bio garner just over 56 percent avoiding runoff and with the SLPP dwarfing the APC in Parliament.

Some members of the APC have urged their party not to boycott government and governance.

Meanwhile the US government has called for probing into the 24 June election.
