The Sierra Leone People’s Party Mayoral Candidate for the Freetown Municipality, Mohamed Gento Kamara has chosen Rev. Samuel Babatunde Thomas as his running for the 24 June Mayoral election.
Kamara made his choice on Friday at the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) West Office in Murray Town, Freetown.
The SLPP Freetown Mayoral Candidate’s choice came a day after the incumbent All People’s Congress (APC) Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr nominated lawyer Kweku Lisk as her running mate for the 24 June election.
About a month ago, the two traded words against each other in separate events with the SLPP Mayoral Candidate accusing the former Mayor Aki-Sawyerr of tribalism and discrimination while in office.
Some political and civil society activists reduced Kamara’s statement to be a tribal slur with intent to cause hate.
Kamara, however, stood by his claim days later he received criticism.
Freetown is the largest and capital city of Sierra Leone. Many locals face difficulty living in the city due to poor planning and massive population boom after the country’s 10-year civil war.
The former mayor made plans under the Transform Freetown Plan to give the city a facelift. Critics have, however, called the project a sham and waste of taxpayer’s money.
