Sierra Leonean social commentator Zainab Sheriff has renewed her call for a woman to lead the country, urging citizens to support stronger female representation at the presidency.

At the same time, she stressed that if the current government produces a male contender, only Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella stands a credible chance of challenging the All People’s Congress (APC) in future elections.

Sheriff said Sierra Leone urgently needs transformational leadership that reflects the capabilities and vision of its women, noting that the political landscape has long sidelined them despite their contributions in governance, business, and community development.

While championing the election of a woman, she emphasized that leadership must also be grounded in integrity, competence, and national appeal. “No one from this government should be talking about the presidency except Dr. Kandeh Yumkella,” she said. “He is the only person who can give the APC a run for their money.”

Dr. Yumkella, a former presidential aspirant and leader of the National Grand Coalition (NGC) before joining the government, is widely recognized for his experience in global development, energy policy, and governance reform.

Sheriff’s remarks have sparked conversations on social media, with citizens debating the feasibility of a female presidency, women’s roles in politics, and Yumkella’s potential political trajectory. As Sierra Leone approaches future electoral cycles, her advocacy highlights the ongoing national debate over leadership, gender parity, and political reform.
