Sierra Leone is set to make its mark at the 5th World Nomad Games in Astana, Kazakhstan, with two mass-wrestling athletes representing the nation. Among 2,000 athletes from 150 countries, Sierra Leonean wrestler Ansu Bakarr Kamara will open the competition in the 90kg mass-wrestling category on Tuesday, facing an opponent from the host nation.
The participation of the athletes has been made possible by the National Sports Authority (NSA), under the leadership of Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, who has vowed to back all high-performing sports in Sierra Leone. The NSA extended well-wishes to the athletes, affirming their commitment to enhancing the country’s presence in international sporting events.
The NSA has recently supported various teams, including the National Amputee Football Team, which earned the Fair Play award at the Amputee Football Nations Cup in Cairo, and Sierra Leone gymnasts, who secured gold medals at the 2nd Baku Gymnastics Showpiece in Azerbaijan. Additionally, the Roll Ball National Team clinched a 4-2 victory over Ivory Coast in Abidjan.
Dr. Abdulai emphasized that the NSA’s support is focused on sports that exhibit cross-border performance, solid governance, and strong national representation. Established by an Act of Parliament, the NSA is tasked with promoting, developing, and supervising all sporting activities in Sierra Leone.
As the athletes take to the tatami in Astana, Sierra Leone hopes for strong performances in the global competition.
