Sierra Leone has strengthened its representation in continental sports governance following the election of Baseem Mohammed as Vice President for the West and Central Region of the Squash Federation of Africa (SFA).
Mohammed, who currently heads the Sierra Leone Squash Association, emerged victorious in a closely watched regional election conducted on Tuesday, 17 March 2026. He secured a decisive majority, winning 13 of the 18 votes cast, while his opponent, Nigeria’s Sunday Wilson Egberipou, garnered five votes. Out of 21 eligible member nations, 18 participated in the voting process before the official close of polls.
The position became vacant following the passing of Ahmed Adamu Erena in November 2025, prompting the regional body to organize fresh elections to fill the leadership gap.
According to SFA officials, the electoral process was overseen by the federation’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee and independently validated by its Finance and Audit Committee, with the outcome widely endorsed as credible and transparent.
Mohammed’s rise to the regional executive adds to his growing influence within African squash administration. In addition to his new role, he serves on the federation’s Commercial and Business Development Committee, where he contributes to strategic initiatives aimed at expanding the sport across the continent.
Beyond sports administration, Mohammed is also recognized in Sierra Leone’s business sector as the proprietor of Sierra Fishing Company, one of the country’s leading fishing enterprises.
A former squash player, he has played a pivotal role in nurturing the sport locally, supporting athletes and coaches through financial assistance, provision of equipment, and sponsorship of international engagements.
His election is widely viewed as a milestone for Sierra Leone, signaling increased participation in high-level sports decision-making across Africa and opening new opportunities for the growth of squash in the sub-region.
