Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL) officially launched its flagship “Cricket 4 Schools” programme on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, distributing 100 sets of locally produced equipment to educators at Monjasa Park in Murray Town.
The grassroots initiative aims to train 1,000 Physical Health Education (PHE) teachers by the fourth quarter of 2027. The programme aligns with the ICC Legacy Programme for Africa 2027 and seeks to boost youth participation in the sport through coaching clinics, festivals, and inter-school competitions.
Addressing attendees from 50 participating schools, CSL Board Chairman Francis Trevor Samura explained that empowering teachers is necessary to expand the sport’s reach across the country.

“We do not have the human resource capacity to reach all schools. The teachers will help in that regard with the aim of increasing the number of players involved in cricket,” Samura said.
Samura noted that producing the initial 100 equipment sets locally was a strategic decision to bypass high international shipping costs and ensure sustainable, affordable access for beginners. He added that an additional 500 sets of equipment from overseas partners are currently en route and will be distributed upon arrival.

The launch event, which Samura credited the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education for helping facilitate, featured demonstration matches highlighting a modified, highly accessible version of cricket. The exhibition games included matchups between Police Primary School and Murray Town Municipal Primary School, as well as Saint Edward’s Junior Secondary School and Murray Town Municipal Secondary School.
The equipment distribution and matches mark the formal beginning of CSL’s school-level activities for the 2026 calendar year.
