On October 26, 2024, the Director of Sports, Mr. Aroun Korgi, launched the Sierra Leone Masters Athletic (SLMA) on behalf of the Minister of Sports at Montana Car Park, Lumley Beach, Freetown.
The SLMA, established in December 2023 with the motto “Age Is Just A Number,” aims to promote fitness and competitive athletics for individuals aged 35 and above.
SLMA President, Mr. Aiah Bockarie, credited the association’s founding to former athlete Jimmy Thoronka. He emphasized that SLMA focuses on active aging, social integration, and providing a platform for older athletes. Since its establishment, SLMA has competed internationally, winning medals at the Albania Field Masters Championship, and is registered with national and international sports organizations, including the National Sports Association of Sierra Leone and World Masters. Regional coordinators have been appointed to manage SLMA activities across Sierra Leone.
Upcoming events include a local championship in November and training sessions for members. SLMA also plans outreach programs to raise awareness about fitness for older adults.
Representatives from the National Olympic Committee and Sierra Leone Athletics Association expressed support for SLMA, stressing the importance of friendship, mentorship, and collaboration in sports. Mr. A.G. Koroma of the National Olympic Committee highlighted SLMA’s role in passing on knowledge from older to younger athletes.
During the launch, Mr. Korgi hailed the SLMA as a landmark in Sierra Leone’s sports history, reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive sports. He affirmed that SLMA would inspire younger athletes and promote lifelong fitness.
Other speakers, including SLMA Vice President Mr. Yayah Mansaray, also shared their enthusiasm for the organization’s potential to shape Sierra Leone’s athletic future.
