The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted a temporary Category 3 approval for the Stade du 28 Septembre, ending years of exile for Guinea’s national team and clubs. The provisional authorisation, valid for September 2026, is conditional on continued infrastructure improvements.
In a letter dated Aug. 14, CAF informed the Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFOOT) of the decision following a recent inspection that noted progress on renovations. This approval allows the Syli National to host its upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on home soil and permits Guinean clubs to use the venue for CAF interclub matches during the month.
CAF, however, emphasised the clearance is strictly temporary. It noted that several points remain to be corrected for full compliance and reserved the right to send an inspector to oversee a match during this period to ensure safety and operational standards are met. Officials have been urged to “continue, without delay, the necessary corrective work” to secure permanent certification.
The development marks a significant step for Guinean football. The country’s premier stadium has been off-limits for international fixtures for years due to a suspension, forcing the national team to host matches abroad. The approval comes after months of intensive work overseen by the Ministry of Sports, including recent upgrades to dressing rooms, floodlighting, and security access.
While praising the progress, CAF confirmed that the venue’s temporary status means it is not yet fully compliant with all regulations. The situation will be reassessed after the September matches for a potential move to a permanent homologation.
