On Friday, June 21st, 2024, the Sierra Leone Gymnastics Federation presented 20 gold medals to Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai Esq, the Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA).The medals were awarded for outstanding performances at the Baku Azerbaijan Gymnastics Showpiece, a testament to the athletes’ dedication and skill.
Led by President Ann Williams, the federation brought together young gymnasts and their proud parents to express gratitude to the NSA and its leadership. President Williams highlighted the diverse backgrounds of the athletes, some of whom were discovered on the streets or raised by single parents. She underscored the role of nurturing talent and how it has brought global recognition to Sierra Leone, emphasizing her personal commitment to supporting and guiding these young athletes.
Dr. Abdulai graciously received the gymnasts and medals on behalf of the Government and the people of Sierra Leone. He commended the team for their exceptional achievements, noting that their performances have elevated Sierra Leone’s profile on the international stage. In his address, Dr. Abdulai stressed the importance of balancing sports with education, encouraging the athletes to prioritize their academic pursuits alongside their athletic endeavors.
“As I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each of you for your remarkable accomplishments, I urge you to remain dedicated to your education,” Dr. Abdulai remarked, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting organized sports associations. He expressed the government’s intent to decentralize sports initiatives, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to young Sierra Leoneans across all communities.
Furthermore, Dr. Abdulai outlined the government’s commitment to leveraging sports as a platform for youth empowerment, promising to create both temporary and permanent employment opportunities through sports development initiatives.
