Karene, one of the three districts within the North West Region Football Association, has become the first district in Sierra Leone to complete its qualifiers for the 2023 FA Cup Tournament.
The final match took place on Friday, May 19, 2023.
After a goalless draw during the 90 minutes of play, Ashley FC, based in Kamakwie, emerged victorious over Sanderletch FC from Kamalo with a 5-4 win in a penalty shoot-out. This secured Ashley FC a spot in the Round 32 of the 2023 FA Cup Tournament.
The presence of Abdul Osman Turay, Chairman of the North West Region Football Association, added glamour to the event. He generously donated trophies, medals, a substantial amount of cash, and even a pair of boots to players who received individual awards for their exceptional performances.
“I personally finance these contributions because I believe that as a leader, it is important to demonstrate what sets you apart,” he asserted.
Furthermore, Turay honored the executive members of the Karene District Football Association for their dedication to promoting and developing football in the region.
The Chairman of the KDFA, Abdul Kandeh Turay, expressed his sincere gratitude for the timely support, stating, “On behalf of the Karene District Football Association executives, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to our Regional Chairman, Mr. A. O. T. He generously provided football equipment, refreshments, and a significant amount of cash to both teams.”
Chairman Abdul Kandeh Turay also praised both teams for their outstanding performances in reaching the final, particularly acknowledging Ashley FC for emerging as the champions of the 2023 FA Cup in Karene.
He concluded by wishing Sanderletch FC of Kamalo better luck in the future, stating, “You all played exceptionally well, but in football, there can only be one winner.”
