The Sierra Leone Premier League Board (PLB) has confirmed significant changes ahead of the 2024/25 season, which is set to commence in Port Loko with an opening clash between the Cacao Boys from Kailahun and Bai Bureh Warriors.
The season’s opening week promises exciting fixtures, including defending champions Bo Rangers facing Freetown City FC in the capital and Kamboi Eagles marking their return to the league against runners-up Bhantal FC.
Other notable matches in Week 1 will see FC Kallon hosting Wusum Stars, East End Lions squaring off against Bullom Stars (formerly Lamboi FC), Star Sports Academy battling Freetonians FC, Mighty Blackpool taking on Diamond Stars at the SLFA Academy, and Abacha City FC entertaining Wilberforce Strikers.
This season will feature 18 clubs competing in a two-round league format. However, the PLB has announced a major shakeup: the bottom four clubs in the standings will be relegated to Division 1 at the end of the season.
In contrast, only two Division 1 teams will be promoted to the Premier League. This restructuring aims to gradually reduce the number of Premier League clubs to 16 next season and eventually to 14 in subsequent years.
PLB insiders have cited economic constraints and the need to improve the league’s quality as reasons for this decision.
The reduction in teams is expected to create a more competitive environment and ensure sustainable development within the league.
The PLB has outlined its revenue-sharing model for the season. Host teams will retain 80% of gate receipts, while the remaining 20% will go to the league’s management. The board will also oversee security arrangements, while host clubs will manage crowd control through marshals.
To support clubs in their preparations, the PLB announced that each team would receive Le 100,000 from the $150,000 sponsorship package provided by Leone Rock Metal Company, the league’s primary sponsor.
The board is also seeking additional financial backing from the government to increase the resources available to clubs.
The 2024/25 Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years, with clubs not only vying for top honors but also battling to avoid relegation.
As the league undergoes this significant restructuring, fans across Sierra Leone eagerly await the kickoff to witness the action and drama that lies ahead.
Good to hear this structuring
