The National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone (NSASL) is collaborating with Rokel Commercial Bank (RCBank) Sierra Leone Ltd. to organize a Scrabble competition for Sierra Leoneans.
The event aims to encourage students from Secondary Schools, Universities across the country, and the general public to participate. The competition is scheduled for August 19, 2023, starting at 10:00 AM at the Freetown Amusement Park Hall (Victoria Park).
The theme for the competition is “BRINGING SCRABBLE TO ALL SIERRA LEONEANS.” This theme was unanimously chosen during a meeting between NSASL and RCBank on August 7, 2023.
Officials from The National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone expressed their strong desire to promote education and enhance the skills of Sierra Leoneans, particularly students, through Scrabble.
The competition will provide a platform for students to compete competitively with players from the national team and other professionals. NSASL emphasizes inclusivity and gender equality, encouraging female participation in Secondary Schools and Universities.
The NSASL team commended RCBank for its support, which helped secure the hosting rights for the African Scrabble Championship in Sierra Leone in October 2024. The initiative to bring Scrabble to all Sierra Leoneans is seen as a strategy to prepare and build confidence for the upcoming championship.
Dr. Gilpin, MD & CEO of RCBank, is a passionate Scrabble enthusiast. The star prize for the winner is set at NLE2,500 (New notes), NLE2,000 (New notes) for the second best player and NLE1,500 (New notes) for the third best player including medals and promotional items from RCBank for all three players. RCBank will also provide promotional items for both players.
The application is open to all Sierra Leoneans, including students from Secondary Schools and Universities above the age of 13. Successful applicants will undergo trials on August 18th at the Freetown Amusement Park.
Interested participants can access application forms and submit completed forms through various channels, including the Sierraloaded Digital Platform. Contact information for NSASL and RCBank is provided for further inquiries.
