Two distinguished Sierra Leonean cricketers, Abubakarr Kamara and Abass Gbla, have been named to the prestigious West Africa Cricket Team of the Year for 2025.

The selection was based on their outstanding performances during the recently concluded West Africa Trophy, which was held in Abuja, Nigeria, from December 4th to 14th, 2025.

Abubakarr Kamara, the Captain of the Sierra Leone Police Cricket Team, and Abass Gbla, the leader of the Midwest Cricket Team, were recognized for their exceptional skills across batting, fielding, and bowling during the tournament.

Their contributions were notable vital to the success of their respective teams and played a key role in their inclusion in the West Africa Team of the Year, an honor that also comes with financial rewards.

Kamara’s impressive cricketing journey began as the Captain of the Sierra Leone U19 Men’s Cricket Team. Under his leadership, Sierra Leone qualified for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier (CWCQ) Global qualifier.

This achievement included leading the team to gold in the Division 2 Qualifier in Maputo in 2009 and later securing a place in the ICC U19 Men’s CWCQ Africa Division 1.

Kamara’s leadership continued to shine in 2009 when his team triumphed over more established African cricket nations to secure a spot in the CWCQ Global qualifier in Lusaka, Zambia. His reputation as a skilled and inspirational leader has been consistently built both on and off the field.

Abass Gbla, who made his senior debut for Sierra Leone in 2010, also garnered praise for his strong performances and consistent professionalism during the tournament.

Known for his commitment to the game and his leadership abilities, Gbla’s efforts in the West Africa Trophy 2025 were instrumental to Sierra Leone’s competitive performance, further solidifying his place in the West Africa Team of the Year.

Both Kamara and Gbla were among the four most experienced players in the Sierra Leone squad at the West Africa Trophy. In addition to their individual achievements, the team was also bolstered by the stellar batting performances of John Bangura from Special Line Cricket Club, who finished as Sierra Leone’s leading batsman with 180 runs across 10 matches.

The West Africa Team of the Year 2025, which includes top-performing players from Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zambia, recognizes the best cricketers from across the region. Kamara and Gbla’s selection highlights the growing recognition of Sierra Leone’s cricketing talent on the continental stage.
