A London-based Sierra Leonean wrestler, Gabriel McDuffie, showcased his skills at the English Senior Open on Saturday, February 8, 2025, achieving a commendable record before facing unforeseen challenges.

Competing against elite athletes, McDuffie made waves by securing victories in two key matches, defeating a strong competitor from Mongolia and another from Iran. His impressive performance propelled him to the semi-finals, putting him in contention for a coveted title.

However, an unfortunate injury, coupled with personal circumstances, forced McDuffie to withdraw from the semi-final round. Despite stepping back from the tournament, he secured a respectable fifth-place ranking, underscoring his talent and determination on the mat.

McDuffie’s journey follows his recent commitment to fostering the development of wrestling in Sierra Leone.

In November 2024, he demonstrated his dedication by donating 18 wrestling singlets and 10 pairs of shoes to the Sierra Leone Wrestling Association (SLWA), aiming to inspire young athletes and promote the sport in his ancestral homeland.

“As a resource for these young athletes, I want to help them realize their potential,” McDuffie stated, emphasizing the importance of community support and a renewed sense of pride in Sierra Leonean wrestling.
