The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has confirmed that its Ordinary Congress will go ahead as planned today, Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown. However, the start time has been pushed back from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
This announcement comes amidst recent dramatic developments involving the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the SLFA. On Friday, April 4th, SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima was arrested and detained by the ACC along with two other officials over allegations of misappropriation of public funds.
While the specific details of the charges remain undisclosed, sources indicated that President Brima was held at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Freetown.
However, in a swift turn of events, President Brima was released from CID custody on Friday. Shortly after his release, he issued a statement maintaining his innocence and urging the ACC to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
“Today, on my release from CID on alleged graft by the ACC, I encourage the Commissioners to do their utmost best in proving their claims,” Brima stated. “As a President who believes in fostering the development of football, I am sure that there is nothing to hide in the cupboard.”
President Brima emphasized his commitment to transparency, inclusion, and development during his four-year tenure, asserting that his focus has been on improving football in Sierra Leone. “My four years have been about making the game a beautiful one for all. Let justice be done. Football must develop in Sierra Leone,” he added.
Despite these turbulent events, the SLFA, in its press release issued on Friday, reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, governance, and the continued growth of football in the country. The Association assured all stakeholders that the Congress would be conducted in accordance with its statutes, promising a productive and forward-looking engagement.
Delegates, accredited journalists, and invited guests are advised to take note of the new 2:00 PM start time for the SLFA Ordinary Congress at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The proceedings are expected to be closely watched in light of the ongoing situation involving the Association’s leadership.
