The Ministry of Sports recently met with a Chinese delegation, led by Ambassador Wang Qing, to discuss progress on the rehabilitation of Sierra Leone’s National Stadium.
The discussions, held on November 28, 2024, at the Siaka Stevens Stadium Hostel, focused on enhancing the stadium’s infrastructure to meet international standards and preserving its legacy as a national landmark.
Ambassador Wang highlighted the project’s significance as a symbol of Sierra Leone-China friendship and assured China’s commitment to addressing safety and seating capacity concerns.
He noted that the initiative aligns with agreements made during President Julius Maada Bio’s visit to China and aims to ensure the stadium serves future generations.
Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, described the meeting as pivotal for Sierra Leone’s sporting future, praising China’s unwavering support. She emphasized the economic and morale-boosting benefits of a modernized stadium for the nation.
Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), stressed the need for expanded seating to host international matches and highlighted the role of a robust home crowd in supporting teams during competitions.
The collaboration aims to restore the National Stadium’s status as a hub for sports excellence while strengthening bilateral ties. Participants expressed optimism that the project would enhance Sierra Leone’s sports landscape and foster national pride for years to come.
